Vadaman Pangaligal Sangam

அருப்புக்கோட்டையில் சுமார் 150 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் வாழ்ந்த நமது வடமன் முன்னோர்களில் சிலர் கோம்பை மலை, கொல்லிமலை கோயிலுக்குச் சென்று அருள்மிகு மாசி பெரியண்ண சுவாமியை தரிசனம் செய்து விட்டுத் திரும்பினார்கள். அவர்கள் வாழ்க்கை பால் போல் பொங்கி வளம் பெருகியது. அவர்கள் தங்களைப் போல் வடமன் பங்காளிகள் அனைவரும் வேண்டும் என்று விரும்பினார்கள்.

அக்காலத்தில் அடிக்கடி மலைகளுக்குச் சென்று வர முடியாத நிலைமை ஏற்பட்டதால் நமது முன்னோர்கள் அங்கிருந்து பிடி மண் எடுத்து வந்து கோயில் கட்ட எண்ணினர். அவர்களில் சிலர் விரதங்களை மேற்கொண்டு பக்தியுடன் பூர்வீக கோயிலுக்குச் சென்று வரப் புறப்பட்டனர்.

அவர்கள் கோம்பை மலை, கொல்லி மலைக்குச் சென்று அருள்மிகு பெரியண்ண சுவாமியை வணங்கி, அருளாசி பெற்று பிடி மண் எடுத்தனர். அவர்கள் இரட்டை மாட்டு வண்டியில் ஏறி மலைகள், காடுகள், பல ஊர்கள் கடந்து வாரக் கணக்கில் நெடுந்தூரம் பயணம் செய்தனர்.

இறுதியில் விருதுநகர் வழியே அருப்புக்கோட்டைக்குள் வந்த போது நாடார் உறவின்முறை முத்து மாலை நந்தவனம் முன்பாக உள்ள வேப்ப மரத்தடியில் மாடுகள் படுத்துவிட்டன. அதற்கு மேல் செல்ல மாடுகள் மறுத்து விட்டன. பிடி மண் கொண்டு வந்த கலயத்தையும் அந்த இடத்தை விட்டு அவர்களால் நகர்த்த முடியவில்லை. அவ்விடத்திலேயே பிடி மண்ணை வைத்து பெரிய பீடங்களை அமைத்து வழிபடத் தொடங்கினர்.

நாளடைவில் ஊர் செழித்து விரிவடையும் போது நகராட்சியார் பாதையில் உள்ள பீடங்கள் போக்குவரத்திற்கு இடையூறாக உள்ளது என்று கூறி பீடங்களை வேறு இடத்திற்கு மாற்றும் படி உத்தர விட்டனர். பீடங்களுக்குத் தென்புறம் தெய்வத்திரு. வ.சி.பெரிய கருப்ப நாடாரின் சொந்த இடம் இருந்தது. அவருடைய மக்கள் அந்த பீடங்களை தங்கள் சொந்த இடத்திற்கு முறைப்படி மாற்றி வைத்துக் கோயிலாக உருவாக்கினர். அதுதான் அருப்புக்கோட்டையில், இப்போது உள்ள அருள்மிகு கோம்பை மலை, கொல்லிமலை பெரியாண்டவர் கோயிலாகும்.

அக்காலத்தில் நமது கோயில் ஊருக்குத் தென்புற ஓரத்தில் வனாயதிரமான இடத்தில் அமைந்திருந்தது. தெய்வத்திருமதி. காத்தாயி அம்மாள் அவர்கள் மாதா மாலையம்மன் கோயிலை ஊருக்குள் அமைக்க விரும்பினார். நாடார் மேலத் தெருவிலுள்ள தனது சொந்த வீட்டு இடத்தை கோயிலுக்குக் கொடுத்து உதவினார். அதுதான் இப்போது உள்ள நமது அருள்மிகு மாதா மாலையம்மன் கோயிலாகும்.

In Aruppukottai, some 150 years ago, our Vadaman ancestors sought divine blessings at the distant Kombai malai, Kolli malai temple. After a devout dharshan (divine viewing) of the auspicious Maasi Periyanna Swamy, they returned home. Their lives subsequently flourished, mirroring the abundance of boiling milk, inspiring them to wish the same prosperity for all their Vadaman kin.

Due to the difficulties of frequent travel to the mountains in those days, the community decided to bring a handful of sacred soil (Pidi Mann) from the original shrine to build a local temple. A chosen few, undertaking solemn fasts and vows, set out on the arduous pilgrimage with immense devotion.

They traveled to the remote Kombai Malai and Kolli Malai, worshipped Periyanna Swamy, received his divine grace, and collected the sacred soil. Loading the Pidi Mann into a double-bullock cart, they began a challenging journey lasting weeks, crossing mountains, dense forests, and numerous towns.

Upon finally entering Aruppukkottai via Virudhunagar, the bullock cart unexpectedly stopped. The bulls refused to move past a specific neem tree located in front of the Nadar Uravinmurai Muthu Maalai Nandavanam. Mysteriously, the pot containing the sacred soil could not be physically moved from that exact spot either.

Recognizing this as a divine sign, the ancestors immediately placed the sacred soil there, erected large altars (Peedams), and began regular worship. Over time, as Aruppukkottai prospered and expanded, municipal authorities deemed the altars an obstruction to traffic flow and ordered their relocation. South of the altars lay the private land of the revered late Thiru. V.C. Periya Karuppa Nadar. His descendants respectfully relocated the altars to their land, following proper procedures, and developed the site into the formal temple that stands today: the Arulmigu Kombai Malai, Kolli Malai Periyandavar Temple in Aruppukkottai.

The Founding of the Second Temple

Separately, another temple’s history unfolded. At that time, our original temple was situated in a wild, isolated area on the southern edge of the town. The late Shrimati Kathayi Ammal aspired to establish the Matha Malaiyamman temple within the town limits. In a generous act, she donated her own residential plot on Nadar Mela Street for this purpose. This land is where our present-day Arulmigu Matha Malaiyamman Temple now stands.
